Piloña, Asturias

In the municipality of Piloña, in Asturias, surrounded by unrivalled scenery of forests and views of the Sueve, Ponga, Redes and Picos de Europa mountain ranges, stands Casona de Indias, the dream of an Indian who emigrated to Cuba and completed its construction in 1878. Now it is our dream, and we have restored and decorated it, respecting its essence and charm, adding the necessary modern touches to ensure the comfort and well-being of our guests. What to see?

Piloña is the perfect starting point for discovering some of the most iconic and surprising places in Asturias.

Just a few minutes away, on the Jurassic coast, stands the Asturias Jurassic Museum (MUJA), with its striking architecture in the shape of a dinosaur footprint and a collection that takes you back millions of years. Also nearby is the Cider Museum in Nava, where you can learn about the history, tradition and culture of this emblematic Asturian drink.

For heritage lovers, a visit to San Salvador de Valdedios, a 9th-century pre-Romanesque gem in the heart of the valley, is a must. And if you’re looking for traditional atmosphere and local charm, Cangas de Onís — with its famous Roman bridge — offers history, shops, gastronomy and natural access to the Picos de Europa.

The nearby coastline is equally fascinating. The picturesque fishing port of Lastres, one of Spain’s most beautiful villages, invites you to stroll among cobbled streets, white houses and viewpoints overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. Nearby, the colourful fishing village of Tazones charms visitors with its authentic atmosphere, imperial history and excellent fresh fish. And Villaviciosa, the apple and cider capital, combines tradition, heritage and a lively local scene.

To enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the north of the peninsula, there is nothing like climbing up to the Mirador del Fitu viewpoint, where the mountains merge with the sea in an unforgettable horizon.

Gastronomy

And if there is one thing that sets this area apart, apart from its landscape, it is its extraordinary cuisine. The surrounding area is home to some of the most prestigious restaurants in Asturias, such as Casa Marcial, run by chef Nacho Manzano, with three Michelin stars, and El Corral del Indianu, in Arriondas, renowned for its creativity and flavour.

But beyond the big names, the region is dotted with eateries, cider bars and small family restaurants where the essence of Asturian cuisine is preserved: local produce, recipes passed down from generation to generation and an honest approach to food. Here you can enjoy fabada (bean stew), fish from the Cantabrian Sea, grilled meats and artisan cheeses, always accompanied by traditional Asturian cider, poured according to custom.

An authentic and diverse culinary offering, where haute cuisine and tradition coexist, turning every meal into a memorable experience linked to the place and its people.

Basilica of Covadonga

Covadonga is one of the most emblematic and moving places in Asturias, an enclave where nature, history and spirituality merge into a single landscape. Located at the gateway to the Picos de Europa National Park, its beauty transcends the visual: it is a place that can be felt.

The monumental complex consists of the imposing Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga, whose pink tones stand out among the mountain vegetation, and the Holy Cave, a sanctuary carved into the rock that houses the image of the Virgin of Covadonga, popularly known as La Santina. The sound of the waterfall cascading beneath the cave and the natural surroundings create a unique, almost magical atmosphere.

Picos de Europa National Park

On this side, dominated by the Western and Central massifs, the Picos reveal their most authentic essence: limestone walls that change colour with the light, vertiginous gorges, beech forests that transform with the seasons, and mountain pastures where animals still graze freely. Legendary trails such as the Cares Route, natural viewpoints that look out over the infinite, and high-altitude lakes such as Enol and Ercina make each visit an unforgettable experience.

Villages such as Sotres and Bulnes in the municipality of Cabrales preserve the flavour of mountain life, with traditional architecture, local legends and cuisine that springs from the land itself. Here, culture and landscape go hand in hand: the sound of cowbells, the aroma of Cabrales cheese and the murmur of rivers accompany travellers at every turn.
