Casona de Indias
An establishment with history
Stories of courage, effort and hard work.
Mr José Martino emigrated to Cuba in the mid-19th century. He left his family and his life in Fuentes, Piloña, with the hope of finding a better future in America, in ‘the Indies’. In a family established in the rural world, with 12 siblings, things were not easy.
He settled in the El Vedado neighbourhood of Havana and, with enormous effort, sacrifice and hard work, managed to make his fortune. Grocery stores, restaurants, lottery offices, raw materials trading… and his memory in his native village. Like so many Indians of the time, he dreamed of leaving a visible legacy of his success, and in 1878 he realised his dream with the construction of the current Casona de Indias, accompanied by a twin house in Havana. His initials remain carved on the front door of the house.
Casona de Indias does not want the story of José, or any other Indian, to be forgotten, whether they were successful or not. These anonymous heroes sacrificed their lives in the hope of achieving a better life for themselves and their families, giving up so much in the process.
With absolute respect and admiration, this house, your house, is a humble tribute to all of them.
The gallery lounge
Casona de Indias has been lovingly restored and renovated, maintaining its original character with modern touches.
